Scenes from the Godfather: Mt Loretto

godfather-1.jpg

Ahh, the baptism scene. Where Michael takes action and becomes the Godfather, not only for his Nephew, but for the Corleone family.

At 2:41:20 in The Godfather, you'll see the family leave the church, which leads to Michael being told of the success of his plans to wipe out those who done him (and his older brother Sonny) wrong.

godfather-2.jpg

This is a picture of the church today. It is Mount St Loretto on Staten Island, about 3/4 of the way towards the southern tip of Staten Island, off of Hylan Blvd.

A little creative googling reveals some history. Christopher Drumgoole was a Catholic pastor in Manhattan in 1875. Due to the recent waves of impoverished immigrants, there were a very large number of homeless children who lived on the streets and sold newspapers for a meager living. He founded an orphanage near Lafayette, and then eventually purchased a farm on Staten Island which became Mt Loretto. With the children providing a good chunk of the labor, the farm became self sufficient with cows, chickens and plants.

In the 1990's, the property had become worth millions at a time when the diosesce was under financial strain. Even though it would have been easy to sell to a developer who would build more houses, many people convinced the church leadership to preserve the land. The church kept the parcel of land on the west side of Hylan blvd, while the state bought the east side, going down to the water. You can read more about this wonderful location with a description of the varied environments, the walking trails, the shoreline, and the birds you'll see. It also includes driving directions if you'd like to visit. If you do make it to the shoreline, look for the unique sculpture art created by the "rock guy". He takes washed up debris and rocks and forms interesting sculpture on the beach. His works go down the beach for about a mile.

As for the church, it burned down in 1973, leaving only the fascade. The church rebuilt enough to support the fascade, but not to the same dimensions as is visible in the Godfather. You can read a bit more about the fire (and a subsequent fire in the girls dorm.

To Whom It May Concern,

I lived in Mt. Loretta from 1960 to 1964. Because I have no pictures of myself taken before 1965, I have been searching Mt. Loretto's web site for old photo's. That was no help because most photo's were taken after 1968. I just would love to see what I looked like back then. There must have been some photo's taken in that time frame. I would appreciate some help if any. Thank you
Eva

Mount Lorreto has a Alumni group that get together every year and when I went a couple of years ago I saw people who in my age group (44) and older. They had brought photo dating back from the 50's to the time the Mount closed down. I can put you in touch with some of those people if you like. Take care and good luck.

Reminiscing about my years at Mt. Loretto and looking for friends dating back to 1969, specifically Donna Sica, Lillian Paniagua, Lux Rodriguez, Adelina Rivera, and, especially, Father Eugune Mangan.

My love to all who have had the unforgetable and wonderful experience of living at The Mount...

Josie:

Hi...
I lived at Mt. Loretto, MIV, in Pleasant Plains...
I'm not sure of the date, but perhaps 1952-1953.
I was 9-10 yrs old. I lived at St. Elizabeth's Girls' Orphanage & my two brothers Johnny (11-12) & Angel (6-7) Maldonado, lived across at the "boys" side, for two years, (I think). St. Joachim & St. Anne (at Hylan & Sharrot) was where thousands of kids made their Communion/Confirmation, and I believe group pictures were taken by the Priests/Nuns. (Must be in the archives)of course, the children's families took pictures of everything & anything.

The church burned in December 20,1973. St Elizabeth's was gutted by a big bad fire in 2000.
Brings tears to my eyes. Check out Shaun O'Boyle for the horrible story and pictures of the fire.
Check out Reminisce Tottenville...you might come across someone looking for someone...it might be you. Visit the site often. I loved all the Nuns & Priests!! They taught me well & how to be a good human being. I can see all of them walking the corridors and the grounds...they were so beautiful, in their black Habits & white Habits...in the summer we would sit on the grass and tie the three (3)knots on the cord which were shipped all over the world for Monks & Priests & Nuns to wear. It's called St. Joseph's Cord. The knots are the 3 vows they take...Chastity, Poverty, Obedience. Sister Stevens Marie was my fave...she took me under her wings and helped me so much, during my darkest time. God Bless her always. No reply is needed. I'll be back later, to reminisce some more of yesteryear. I love reading stories from that timeline.

Linda:

Doing some research for a friend- her great-grandfather and younger brother left by mother at boys home Staten Island for a few years. Younger brother born 1888. Would like to know if there are any records from that period which might give birthdates and places, mother's whereabouts, or any other family details so that we can find where in Ireland family came from. Any help much appreciated. Thank you.

Joe Gallo:

if you would like to contact me...please email me at gallo at snet.net...would love to hear from you. Joe

Jim "Joey" Padilla:

Hello everyone,
I pray that you are all doing great. I really didin't feel like "saying" anything, but I find that there are many people who couldn't continue with their lives after "The Mount". I know many were succesful in finding great jobs and building a life with a home and family; but many according to the emails I see here and the info on them it's obvious that the memories created after the mount, don't campare to the memories created at m.i.v. I myself had many great memories there, though at first I hated the place simply because I was tricked into going there. but, once there I learned to love the place the people and everything we did there. I was here from 1959 to 1968. I guess I can say that was where my first family was created and it hurt like hell to have had to leave them.
I see some familiar names on this email board and I get flashbacks. I recall the: Mallon bros Tommy & Jimmy
Joey and Vinnie Gallo
Robert and Patrick Napalitano
Anthony "Smiley" Vazquez
Joey Amado
The Melendez Bros. Angel and Joey
Benny and Alex Santiago
Reggie and Ronnie Martin
Sally Echevarria (was my girl) her sisters Sonia and Sandra, their brothers Efren, Edwin, Wilfredo...
Robert, Henry and iInocencio "Bumpy" Ramos
Guillermo "Glamo" Torres
Julio and Mickie Torres
Isaiah Morales
Priscilla and Teddy Hernandez
Freddy and Dian Prince
Peter and Maria Belessis
Maria Brazzario
Nancy Bonilla
Howie and Jenny Carabello
Carmen Ramos (the first and the second)
My own brother's Hector and Eddie Padilla I can go on and on and on, as I'm sure you all can.
Just want to say that the memories are there fresh as though it were yesterday.
The socials at the girls side gym.
The cadet balls
Sportsnight
Swim, basketball, football, baseball, track and boxing teams.
The singing group competitions.
The scrubby counselor's and the great counselor's.
The very special friends and the not so special. 3
Good or bad the memories are there.
It'll be nice to share...
God bless you all...

Jim Padilla

MICHAEL ALSTON:

i was at saint johns and saint francis from 1975 to 1979 and would like to speat to tony. email me.

Are there anyone out there that remembers me? 1945-1949.

Joseph Manno:

Live at Mount Lorretto from 1950 - 1956. Don't remember any complete names but some partial names, Bruno and Nappa. My memories cover a wide gammit. The hurt at initially being separated from my immediate family, waiting for a visit on visitation days, singing in the choir, the beautiful church and chestnut trees across the street from the front entrance, making my first communion and confirmation, the winters and the festive holidays, being scared by someone dressed as the devil at Holloween, the life size manger scene on or next to the alter with all those wonderfully smelling Christmas tress, going to the Navy or Coast Guard site for Christmas dinner and a visit from Santa, the tunnels /maze through the hay stacks, the walks to the beach, swimming, cook outs and lots more. I've rambled on enough for now but do think of Mount Lorretto often and have mostly good memories of the place. I don't remember the order of nuns, priest and brothers that ran the site, but want to thank them for taking care of us (brothers & sister) during a difficult time in our lives.

Barbara Geiry:

I was at Mt.Loretta 1965-1969 I was Barbara Geiry. I lived at St.Elizibeths. My older sister Eileen lived in the villa. Sister Karen was at st. Elizebeths and my brother Patrick lived on the boys side I would love to talk to anyone who remembers Palasades, walking to pleasant plains to the store. and playing music in the basement. and the snow days. and such. Thanks Barbara

Bob Koster:

My grandfather worked for years in the power plant. He lived in a house in Pleasant Plains and I used to walk the railroad track to bring him lunch sometimes. This of course was back in the late 50's. I sometimes got to pull the chain that would sound the steam whistle at 12 o'clock. The old steam engines were still being used to generate electricity, but I think they were oil fired by then. If anyone remembers Henry Kreis, let me know.

Beverly Pardo:

To whom it may concern, my name is Beverly Pardo. I was in mount loretto along with my sister Cynthia and brother Rory from 1970 to 1975. I wish that somehow someway I could see old picures of myself and my sibling along with all the little girls I lived with. Hopefully one of you will read my letter and contact me. Nelly Rodriquez, Evelyn lopez, Annette mendaro, yvette ?. Mount Loretto has helped me in so many ways when I had no one to turn to, it has left in inpact in my life. Memories of this place will for ever live in my heart. Sinc, from B Pardo

I will never forget Father KENNY
HE WAS A WONDERFUL PERSON--RAY ALEXANDER WHERE ARE YOU

Hi Everyone,

I hope everyone's life has turned out as good or better than mine.

I'm searching for old friends that knew me at Mount Loretto from 1957 to 1969. I went to Tottenville High School, used to sing in a band with Jimmy Padilla (& his brother Hector), and I was even voted "Most likely to succeed" by the kids/counselors at the Mount right before I graduated high school.

Some of the old friends I have already connected with are Elsie Ramos and Joey Rios. It had been some 33 years.... amazing ! This site started the process... Thank you ! My sister Marie & I are looking for several others like Jenny Carabello, David Martin, and others.....

My Email is mcmcepete at aol.com if anyone knows someone I would know.

Thanks,

I knew your grandfather Henny Kriess very well. I tried to look up your ph but there were too many. E me when you see this I would love to talk. Greetings,
I was wondering why the Mission of Immaculate Virgin no longer instills the vaules of the Lord in its occupants and students. In a nutshell why is the church closed. I will be visiting the Mount today with my son who has to attend school there for a short time. I looked up the history of the Mount and was surprised to learn the Church has no congregation. That is very sad. If anyone one knows the reason why please e-mail me. I think Fr. Drumgoole would be very dissapointed if he were still with us . Thank-you in advance. I can be readched at maidenryder@aol.com PEACE

Denise Sarambo:

Hi,

I am trying to locate records for Mt.Loretto around 1920 or 1921. My family is trying to find out if this was the place my Uncle Stephen Gribble lived. We don't know very much about his childhood,he passed away many years ago. What we do know is he was about 3 or 4 when he was put in an orphanage and remained there for 14 years until my grandfather, his brother, went to get him. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I can be reached at Denise97@aol.com
Thank You,
Denise

Pearl Lau:

Hi-My father's best friend (Paul Au) left a boy, Michael Au (Chinese) at ML in the 1960's. He stayed with us on weekends. He moved to California in the late 60's. Our family never heard from him again, and have always wondered what happened to him. If anyone knows, please e-mail us. thanks, Pearl Lau

Joyce Davis:

My father, Salvatore Bologna, lived at Mount Loretto from 1916 to 1924, along with his brother Antonio. His parents, Antonio and Antonina Bologna, emigrated to the U.S. in 1913 aboard the SS Calabria, from Palermo. Antonio suffered a back injury doing manual labor after arrival. Their circumstances deteriorated to the point where they could not provide for their young children. Dad could still remember the day he and brother Antonio left home for Mount Loretto, a very sad day for them. He had good memories, though, especially the kindness of certain people there.
Dad and I visited Mount Loretto in 1991. Sister Isabel Marie joined us for a tour. Dad recounted how visitors arrived on a train that brought them onto the campus. He recognized many buildings. Of course, we visited the church, which had been restored somewhat after the fire.
Dad attended Tottenville High School until his senior year, when he was old enough to make the choice to leave because he wanted to get a job and help his family. He was an intelligent man who would have profited from more education.
I'm grateful there was a place like Mount Loretto that took in children of destitute families. Dad made good friends there, and he continued his friendships until he was the only one left. Dad passed away in 2000, in his 93rd year.
Anyone with information that goes back that far, I would love to hear from. Feel free to e-mail me, jdavis31@houston.rr.com.
Regards...joyce davis

I lived at Mt. Loretto to for quite a while in the 70's. I remember being quite shy and withdrawn. Then I met the most amazing man named Bill D'Ambrosio. He literally saved my life. I left Mt. Loretto when I was 17, I am now 45 and I still keep in touch. He is and always will be the father I never had. We may not be blood related, but I still call him Dad. Mt. Loretto was very good to me and I will carry many great memories. I live in California now and I plan on coming back to NY to see Bill and walk down memory lane. I want to say "Thank you, Mt. Loretto" and "Thank you, Dad".

with much love,

Koni Reyes

Anna Castro:

Hi, My Name is Anna Garcia, but most people would have remembered me as Anna Castro, or by my nickname: 'Sweet Pea'. I attended Mt. Loretta from 1965 'til 1968, which is the year I graduated. I remember Eva Gonzales & Carmen Morales and many, many others. My teachers were Mr. Kelley - Mathematics and Mr. Owens - Social Studies, Mr. Jensen - Science, & Mrs. Brown - Music teacher... Unfortunately, I cannot recall the names of all the nuns... I'm sorry to have learned that the Old Girls Dormitory was burned down in 1973... It was absolutely shocking too me, but I will always cherish the good times I had @ Mt. Loretta School... They taught me the values of becoming a successful, respectable person. If anyone remembers me, please contact me. I would love to hear from you.

William Warren Hughes (Billy):

My name is William Warren Hughes (Billy). I came to Mount Loretto in 1931 at almost 3 years old. While there I was housed in the 1st cottage and 2nd cottage.

I have wonderful memories of Sister Leenteen, (sorry if spelling is incorrect), who was in charge of the first cottage.

I moved to the second cottage in 1935. I left Mount Loretto July 6,1937.

I met a contempory alumnus of the Mount in 1945. His name is Billy Farell. We were in the Navy at that time. We were stationed at Newport, Rhode Island. We played two on two basketball, We enjoyed the reunion. Unfortunately, we lost touch.

Father Kenny was a newly arived very popular priest in 1936. Am I correct? Did he not spend the balace of his dedicated life at Mount Loretto?

Monsignor Patrick A. O'Boyle was in charge of the institution at that time. I can't remember the name Monssignor's name who preceded Monsignor O'Boyle.

The entire farm operation was in full swing, while I was there during the Great Depresion of the 1930s. The economic stresses of the Depression were the chief reasons my widowed mother had the Court place me in Mount Loretto.

Most of Staten Island, excludig St. George was then quite as rural as Iowa. I have often reminded my grandchildren.

I remember the beautiful chucrh in which I received first communion and confirmation.
I was very sad to find that it had been burned and destroyed.

I was in a theater watching the film, "The Godfather", when I thought I recognized the white gazebo, or band stand in the field near the Church. Two days later I realized that I knew that site. It was Mount Loretto.

I remember two white, framed cottages some way down the unpaved path, passed the baseball field, and the dinnig rooms. These two buildings, I felt were in the woods. One of the was a quarantine for newly arrived children, and the other was for ayone afflicted with a contagious ailment. I spent time there on several occasions, becasue I, unfortunately, was acutely allergic to poisin ivy. I must admit, on several occasions, I wiped the poisin ivy leaves on my arms and legs in order to return to that bucalic peaceful environment.

Do I remember Father Pavis from 1943 to 1945 at Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx?

It is a joy to send this message to those of you at Mount Loretto.

I remain, sincerely,
William w. Hughes

Fludd:

I was at Mt. Lorreto between 1979 and 1984. I'm looking for any kind of records or photos of my stay there as a child. To Koni Reyes, I knew Bill Di'Ambrosio also. He was a good guy who helped me and encouraged me to take the test to become a Traffic Enforcement Agent. I am very thankful to him. If you have any way of getting in contact with him, please email me at spirit@undergodproductions.org.

Thank you.

I sit here trying to think of what to say. I have read everything posted here and It brings up feelings I had thought I put behind me. It would be great to know what happned to my friends. I was there with my brother Stanley and latter Rudy joined us. My sister Cindy was also there on the girls side. I am thinking it was from about late 63 to late 68. I started in 1st house and later went to 6th house. I went to Saint Als, never could spell the name. I do remember I had a good friend Mike Medina this was in 6th house top dorm.
