Johnathan Borofsky: Walking to the Sky

borofsky-1.JPG

Rockefeller Center (Flash) has just put up some new art. Johnathan Borofsky's piece Walking to the Sky is a beautiful large sculpture pointing the way into the blue sky.

The scale of it fits well within the plaza and complements the large buildings. Well worth stopping by for a visit before it disappears in a month.

Jonathan’s Borofsky’s Walking to the Sky sculpture at the Nasher indeed has captured me.

When I looked at the piece I was not sure if the two men and the boy on the ground were merely onlookers trying to make sense of the walkers’ madness or if they were cautiously waiting to join them, instead of looking up and laughing, it made me to explore the piece further. So, I looked at the sculpture from different angles within the garden. Low and behold when I looked at the walkers from the north- west end of the garden, walking towards the grass steps, of the auditorium, the gender of the lead walker, all of a sudden changed. I thought I was seeing things or that perhaps I was attempting to justify my interpretation of the piece, so I called my friends over to where I was standing and asked them to look up at the walkers once more. They too saw what I saw…. Ever since then, whenever I visit the Nasher I enjoy taking people over to experience Borofsky’s Walking to the Sky and to explore perspectives, especially the one I discovered on this sculpture.

I challenge you to walk over to the north west part of the garden and look up at the seven walking figures from that angle, focus specifically at the leader (the walker closest to the sky.)
My interpretation of Borofsky’s Walking to the Sky is that the giant(the artist)is asking people on earth to examine the changing gender roles and its effects on family and society as we proceed up the ladder of success in our quest for materialism.
