The famous Munson Diner started the next phase of it's life tonight. Last year, Gothamist reported on it's closing. The Volvo dealership wanted to expand to the corner and had purchased it. They then put it up for sale. Locals and architects (great pics) wondered what would happen to it.
Today, warned by Curbed and NY1, I found out it had been purchased by private investors from Liberty, NY (map). Oh, and it was moving late tonight. Since I was nearby, I wandered over to get a few pictures of the event.
I was very impressed watching the crew jack the diner up, put two i-beams underneath and tow the diner right out onto the street. More pictures and descriptions of the process tomorrow.

Great photographs! Thanks to the efforts of the American Diner Museum, another piece of the American Roadside and urban landscape has been saved for future generations to experience and enjoy!

Hey! How about going up to Liberty and taking some shots of the Munson in its brand new location? Oh sure, it's a lot of effort. Really, it's only a two to two and 1/2 hour road trip up Route 17. I used to do it every other months. But I'm on the west coast now and can't do it anymore. Glad to know the Munson was saved, I ate there only once in the 1980's sometime.

That's a good idea. I'll try to schedule it next time I head north.

I was just up in Liberty this past week, and am sorry to say the work on this diner is as yet unfinished. It's just sitting on a dirt lot, looking very sad. I don't know anything else about it, but the diner intrigued me enough to look it up online, and I found this site. There is a diner near my home, in Phoenixville, PA, which is being threatened by a Walgreen's. They are supposed to move it within the borough, but no one can believe it's going to stay in the area. It's an institution in my area. It's so sad losing these prize structures to development.

The Munson Diner opened in its new location in Liberty, N.Y. on November 29th, 2007.The inside has seen some changes because of the Liberty building codes, but there is enough of the old diner to appeal to the nostalgic. Fred LaGutta of Swan Lake and his family worked hard to renovate the 1940's diner on a shoe string budget. Today is the second day of operation and they have regular customers who come in for breakfast and lunch. It is not a greasy spoon at all!
