It's been a year since the Queen Mary 2 first docked on Manhattan's West Side piers. I've seen it a few times since. In an amazing coincidence, I was invited to a birthday party in Red Hook on the same day the Queen Mary 2 was switching docks to Brooklyn. It was such a nice day that I felt I had to go for a skate and check out the new digs. I love the shot of downtown on the left behind the ship.
Of course, I didn't get up at 5am like Amy from Newyorkology.com did.
Security was tight all over, cops on every corner and many streets blocked off. You can see pretty much an entire fire house off to the right. I took this picture through a fence with a cop standing on either side of me.
You could even see it from the Van Brunt pier.
This is as it started leaving. It was moving slow here, but rapidly picked up speed. This really gives you a sense of the scale since we're about 5 blocks away at this point.

The remnants of Bob Diamond's proposed trolley line and museum a few years ago. he had purchased the cars frpom all over. Bob actually started installing trolley tracks, but ran out of money and the city dropped its support and ripped up his tracks. That's the short version. A new organization hopes to use the trolley cars and continue the work.
