As we wandered around Asheville, we were surprised by how many of the streets and areas reflected NYC and even more specifically Staten Island names. Even some of the buildings looked a bit ... familiar.

Just in case the building above didn't look familiar enough to you, they put out a sign explaining it's background.

And just in case you missed the sign, they put a huge flat iron in front.

There's another flatiron building (two stories tall) in Verona, New Jersey! The idea isn't all that radical. :-)

P.S. That iron is the worst kind of public sculpture, aimed at people not likely to Get It. "It's a flat iron, in front of a flat iron building - wow, what a "concept!" But then those rubes in the red states need all the help they can get!

Yes, us "rubes" need all the help we can get. Please, enlighten us as your brilliance is clearly astounding. As a southern transplant in NYC, I can clearly see that you are the one that needs help.
Asheville happens to be quite a liberal town.

Actually the big iron is pretty damn charming when you see it in context. Feels like a huge Monopoly piece.

Asheville was definitely a casual and fairly libertal place. Personally, I had a great time there. I did think the sculpture was a bit overkill: "flatiron, I get it". But it caught my eye and made me laugh, so I guess it worked afterall.

Sorry about mischaracterizing Asheville, I don't know how a liberal town ended up in North Carolina! :-O
