For a great subway experience, I recommend the northernmost exit from the downtown platform of the Franklin stop on the 1 line. As you climb the stairs on a warm day, the first thing you sense is a pleasant sense of dislocation, which quickly resolves itself into the unmistakable smell of a stable... specifically, the police stable next door. There are occasionally horses being led to waiting vehicles like the one in your picture, and more often you see kids dragging their parents to peek into one of the open doorways to see the horses being groomed and fed.
